Sleeper Meta MACHINE Tournament Coverage

3/21/2020

Picture
On March 15th Goatformat.com hosted the first Sleeper Meta tournament. The rules to this custom tournament were:

1. No more than FIVE non-machine monsters (THIS INCLUDES THE SIDE/FUSION DECK)
2. You may NOT manipulate the deck's theme by siding it in/out.
3. Keep in mind that this is a fun tourney with machine-based decks, do not try to find holes in the 2 restrictions above. For this reason a deck list may be declined by the host.

Check out the top 4 deck list from the tournament below and interviews from the first place winner as well as the runner up!

Janez: 2nd Place

GoatFormat.com: How often do you attend live events or compete online?
Janez: This was my first online event, but live i play every month.
GoatFormat.com:  How did you prepare for the tournament?
Janez: Once on the day of the regionals, I saw limiter removal and said i am going to otk people haha.  I tested the build a day before the tourney and it worked 70% of the time so i decided to play it.
GoatFormat.com: What match ups were you most prepared for?
Janez:  Every matchup that didn't run Solemn Judgment(i sided decrees for that deck but the situation never came up).
GoatFormat.com: who were you not looking forward to playing against if anybody?
Janez: Siwski haha which i faced in the losers finals and with some lucky Gatling flips i beat.
GoatFormat.com:  MVP card of the tourney?
Janez: Limiter Removal for sure
GoatFormat.com:  What are your past accomplishments in Yu-Gi-Oh! ?
Janez: some tops at regionals back in 2015/16
GoatFormat.com:  I noticed you chose to use two Thousand-Eyes Restrict without many level one mosnters, can you explain why?
Janez: I wanted to side the Thousand-Eyes Restrict and Scapegoat in for surprise because I was planning that everybody would side Threatening Roars and OTK stoppers in, and wanted to play a more controlled build. In retrospective I would have added two copies of Scapegoat for sure.
GoatFormat.com: you were the only person who chose to play cipher soldier. did it come up like you expected?
Janez: Nah never came up, I played it to get over Black Luster Solider, but it didn't come up.
GoatFormat.com:  did you enjoy this custom rules type of event, and would you play in another?
Janez: This SLEEPER META tourney was the best haha of course i would play in another
GoatFormat.com:  Any advice you have for players wanting to compete in tournaments?
Janez: Just have fun
GoatFormat.com: Any shoutouts you wanna make?
Janez: Siwski and YA BOY RANDAGE for hosting an awesome tourney and Skully of course :)

GoatFormat.com: how often do you attend live events or compete online?
willkie: first online tournament
GoatFormat.com: How did you prepare for the tournament?
willkie: Two weeks ago my friend told me and I built this in 5 mins (for real) and won against his 3 different decks he had, so didn't need to change at all. After that I forgot about this event until the last minute.
GoatFormat.com: What matchups were you most prepared for?
willkie: Aggro and Goat Control
GoatFormat.com: Who were you not looking forward to playing against if anybody?
willkie:  everyone was great
GoatFormat.com: MVP card of the tourney?
willkie: Delinquent Duo and Helping Robo for Combat
GoatFormat.com: What are your past accomplishments in ygo / goat format?
willkie:  I don't really have one but I run local tournaments in a small town and have a elo system. Usually get first place and ranked first with elo I usually play modern competitive yugioh
GoatFormat.com: What changes would you make to your deck / side if any going forward?
willkie:  would side Nobleman of Crossout if everyone was going to set stuff - which I didn't expect, scapegoats for Reasoning Gate and Aggro - didn't put enough time into deck building
GoatFormat.com: What made you choose ufo turtle + footballer over something like roulette barrel?
willkie:  I felt aggro was the best deck and creature swap recruiter is strong against those. I feel Roulette Barrel's effect is too small to consider as an effect. UFO Turtle bringing out footballer after the last attack and stalling with that switching to defense was the plan also UFO crashing to Dekoichi was another reason for the choice
GoatFormat.com: Can you explain more to me about the Drillago choice in side?
willkie: it was for reasoning gate(stein decks) to kill them. I swap out Helping Robos and Black Luster Solider for this match up because waiting for Black Luster Solider is just not ideal and Helping Robos doesn't work that effectively.
GoatFormat.com: Did you enjoy this custom rules type of event, and would you play in another?
willkie: Yes I really liked it. I feel 2 attribute sounds good and I would play water dark.
GoatFormat.com: Any advice you have for players wanting to compete in tournaments?
willkie: I felt people didn't realize aggro would be the best deck in this format - it may not be. However I think having an insight for a deck choice would be really helpful in this kind of event
Any shout outs you wanna make?
willkie: human_sadness: he told me about the event. he is a good friend (whos officially ranked matchup in our town for this season head to head score is 10-0) but he says he is doing pretty good in the goatformat discord. so good luck to him and shout out to you both commentators, I enjoyed watching the stream as well.

siwski: 3rd Place
