Light Monsters in Goat Format

4/23/2019

In Goat Format, playable light monsters are significantly less plentiful than dark monsters are. Chaos decks are one of the main pillars of Yu-Gi-Oh!’s Goat Format, and one of the challenges involved in constructing a chaos deck is finding enough reliable sources of light monsters to fill your graveyard for Chaos Sorcerer. Here is a quick guide to all of the light monsters in the format that are considered fit for competitive play. They are roughly sorted from most to least popular. We excluded Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning from the list, as it is itself a chaos monster.

Picture

Magician of Faith

Magician of Faith is a powerful staple for any control deck. It is often a virtual +1 in card advantage by getting back Pot of Greed, Graceful Charity, Delinquent Duo, Snatch Steal, or Heavy Storm from the graveyard. It should be one of the first monsters that you look to when constructing your light monster lineup.
Goat Format Magical Merchant

Magical Merchant

Magical Merchant is often praised for being a light LV1 target for Metamorphosis whose flip effect allows it to replace itself. In a deck with Chaos Sorcerer, it serves the even more important role of potentially milling other lights/darks to be used as a resource to summon your chaos monsters.
Goat Format Thunder Dragon

Thunder Dragon

Thunder Dragon is a built-around card for sure, as our Thunder Dragon Chaos deck guide explains in detail. It will give you all of the light monsters that you need, but it poses its own consistency issues. It can be powerful, but can’t just throw it into any deck lightly.
Airknight Parshath

Airknight Parshath

Airknight Parshath is a must-have in Goat Control, but it usually doesn’t see play in the dedicated chaos decks. It’s hard to find room for both chaos monsters and tribute monsters in the same deck, and it increases the risk of drawing dead hands. Chaos decks might occasionally play it as a 1-of.
Goat Format D.D. Warrior Lady

D.D. Warrior Lady

D.D. Warrior Lady is technically a light monster, but its effect prevents it from ending up in the graveyard very often. Nonetheless, its effect makes it a solid card, and it can be probably counted as “half of a light monster” in any decklist. It can be used for offense or defense, and it’s the best target for Shining Angel.
Goat Format Asura Priest

Asura Priest

Asura Priest fades in and out of popularity. Its primary use is clearing goat tokens and pairing well with Creature Swap. This makes it great in a Chaos Recruiter decklist or any other aggressive chaos variant and allows it to occasionally see play in other chaos decks.
Goat Format Sacred Crane

Sacred Crane

Unsurprisingly, light monsters that draw cards are desirable, but drawing cards with Sacred Crane can be easier said than done. Sacred Crane really only has one use, as a staple in Reasoning Gate Combo. Historically, other decks have tried to pair it with Marauding Captain, but this is has not been proven to be viable in Goat Format.

Blade Knight

Blade Knight is a common aggressive monster, as both of its effects are quite useful. Flip effects are abundant in Goat Format, and 2000 attack allows it to destroy commonly played monsters like Airknight Parshath, Abyss Soldier, and Breaker the Magical Warrior in battle. Blade Knight can be a good pick in either the main deck or sidedeck to fill the aggressive role.
Goat Format Skilled White Magician

Skilled White Magician

Skilled White Magician is boring and often played as a “filler” light monster. It’s never going to win you a game, but it will rarely be completely useless either. It can be played in as 1-of in a deck like Thunder Dragon Chaos to round out the light lineup, or it be played as a flexible 3-of in Chaos Control.
Goat Format Shining Angel

Shining Angel

One of my personal favorites, Shining Angel seems mediocre on on the surface, but there are a number of good targets to search with it. D.D. Warrior Lady is the obvious one, but Magician of Faith and Magical Merchant also work for Metamorphosis or Tsukuyomi synergy. You can also get a few juicy targets from the sidedeck.
Goat Format Jowgen the Spiritualist

Jowgen the Spiritualist

Speaking of Shining Angel targets, we have Jowgen the Spiritualist. As a sidedeck option, it does quite well against Reasoning Gate Combo by either shutting down their namesake cards preemptively or destroying an already established board.
Goat Format Ninja Grandmaster Sasuke

Ninja Grandmaster Sasuke

Ninja Grandmaster Sasuke mostly serves as the other light target for Reinforcement of the Army in addition to Blade Knight. This gives it a niche role in decks like Anti-Meta Warriors in order to take care of monsters like Spirit Reaper and Gravekeeper’s Spy. It could potentially be used for a chaos/warrior decklist, though.
Goat Format Roulette Barrel

Roulette Barrel

Roulette Barrel mostly serves as a sidedeck target for Shining Angel, but any chaos deck could sidedeck it if they need the light wall. It’s not nearly as good at fending off aggression as Gravekeeper’s Spy and Legendary Jujitsu Master are, but it does its job.
Goat Format Zaborg the Thunder Monarch

Zaborg the Thunder Monarch

A few might swear by Zaborg the Thunder Monarch, but nearly all will concede that Airknight Parshath is better in the light tribute slot. Zaborg the Thunder Monarch could be used in order to splash Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning into a Monarch deck, however. As a monarch, Zaborg is unique in two ways: It’s the only light monarch and also the only level 5 monarch.
Goat Format The Creator

The Creator

The Creator is a rare choice in Reasoning Gate Combo as another powerful LV8 monster in addition to Dark Magician of Chaos. If your opponents are wise though, they will be sure to catch on and call level 8 on Reasoning every time, which decreases its effectiveness.
Goat Format Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands

Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands (and Senju)

Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands (as well as Senju of the Thousand Hands) are great choices in any deck with ritual monsters, such as a Relinquished-based deck. Both Manju and Senju, as well as Relinquished have strong synergy with Tsukuyomi. And with these monsters supplying the lights, you should have enough lights and darks to play as many chaos monsters as you want.
Goat Format Guardian Angel Joan

Guardian Angel Joan

An even rarer choice in Reasoning Gate Combo is Guardian Angel Joan, which can serve as LV7 light monsters to mix-up Reasoning calls and make it easier to summon Chaos Sorcerer. The lifepoint boost from Guardian Angel Joan could be what you need to activate Dimension Fusion, but it’s a little situational.
Goat Format X-Head Cannon

X-Head Cannon

Would you believe me if I said that this card was included in a decklist that placed top4 at the 2005 World Championship? X-Cannon Soldier serves the very niche role of being a light machine monster with reasonable stats. This means that it will likely be included in any decklist with both Chaos Sorcerer and Limiter Removal. It’s also a Dark Factory of Mass Production target.

You should consider ceremonial bell in this list. It is a difficult card to utilise, but it is a level 3 which rarely is called off of a reasoning gate combo.

Once it is on the field, you get to see your opponents hand, which lets you decide whether you can end the game early or not.

Homunculus the Alchemic Being should be on this list. He has 1800 ATK and 1600 DEF (a higher DEF than X-Head Cannon by 100 points).

All things that Homonculus is not.
