The Goat Format World Championship 2023 is here! 74 of the best players in the world are duking it out for guts and glory! Malte "Alephya2" Lowecke is no stranger to prestigious events like this, and it's well known that we can often count on him to bring the spice, even when the World Championship title is on the line!

Peten the Dark Clown is an oft' misunderstood monster that has been the catalyst for many "missed timing" rulings. Still, in the right scenario, he can be quite powerful. He's even seen some tournament success before, notably in Monarch shells.

Lowecke is fully aware of the benefits Peten brings to tribute-heavy decks. He's sporting plenty of beefy boys, like Zaborg the Thunder Monarch, to feed off of the clown's free summons. With much of the rest of the deck looking like a Chaos Turbo shell, it seems speed was a big factor for Lowecke when considering the strategy. With Peten included alongside many of Turbo's staple cards, this deck has the potential for some very explosive plays.

Player Insight

We asked Lowecke for insight into this interesting strategy, and why he felt so confident in it that he brought it to the world championship. He's got some history with the format's most confusing clown, so that definitely helps!
I had of my biggest successes with a Monarch deck based around Peten and wanted to look into it again. Also, I did often struggle with opponents summoning DMoC vs. me. So I tried to mix those two ideas together. My other option would have been to play a 'standard' Earth Aggro deck, but I just didn't feel the motivation for that.

As written before, I used Peten because I like it as a tribute fodder card, making DMoC plays more accessible. Having it together with Graceful Charity can allow a very fast Zaborg summon to put pressure on slower decks.

One of the key cards in the deck is Magical Merchant, since its effect allows it to trigger Peten when milled for a +1 play, and it's also good for getting Sinister Serpent or even DMoC into the grave for later revival plays. Zaborg is still a really good tribute monster to Chaos Turbo, and the light and dark core easily allows me to play BLS as well.
It's clear Lowecke has a deep understanding of Peten and the complicated interactions surrounding the card. Things seem to be working out for him, too, as he's off to a strong 2-1 start in the tournament!
I am so far quite happy with the deck. It did what it was supposed to do and did feel quite rounded. Match 1 I partially lost due to not being able to resolve a single trinity card, but that's of course part of the general variance in Goat Format. Therefore, I did draw quite decently in my last-round match.

The build probably isn't perfect yet, but I do honestly think that it has the potential to be a successful rogue-tier deck.
