Goat Format Championship 20 Deck Tech: GyomberMan's "GilaMonarchs"

We've started off Goat Format Championship 20 with 178 players! While the format's staple contenders are in attendance, there's also an unusual amount of spice being seen at today's tables. Francesco Fraietta (AKA GyomberMan), for example, is piloting an Earth-centric Monarch deck that features Gilasaurus!

Deck list

Goat format arguably has two premier Monarch decks. The first is Soul Control, an archetype pioneered by Evan Vargas back in the historic age of the format. Soul Control utilizes Soul Exchange to tribute opposing monsters in order to summon its monarchs. The other is a more aggressive version of the deck that usually replaces Soul Exchange with Brain Control. Fraietta's list is definitely closer to latter, as it features a full three Brain Control, as well as an incredibly aggressive lineup up Earth monsters like Gigantes and Injection Fairy Lily. What's unique about his list is the absence of recruiters like Giant Rat or Nimble Momanga. Instead, he's opted to play Gilasuarus as a super quick tribute fodder monster that allows for lightning fast pushes for damage.

Player Insight

Fraietta has fought his way to a 2-1 record so far in today's event, which is impressive for a rogue strategy such as this. When discussing why he wanted to play this list, it was clear that speed was definitely a factor in the descision-making process.
I wanted to play a fast deck because I didn't know if I had the time to play all of the tournament. The deck is fun and can possibly OTK opponents.

I wanted to use Gilasaurus and his combo potential with Last Will and Monarchs, so I decided to main deck him, as well as Gigantes, Stein, and Lily to OTK. I think it is unexpected to play something like this, but obviously it sucks hard to Duo and Dustshoot, so I don't suggest to play it as of now.

I was 2-0, then my opponent opened Duo g1, Duo g2, Duo g3, and I couldn't do anything at all, but the deck worked out pretty well.

Don't play Gila, but you must consider it if you want to play a fun last will monarch build.
Despite the spice bringing up the "cool" factor of the deck (as well as its speed), it would seem Fraietta is not so confident in the dashing dino anymore. Still, at 2-1 he's got the potential to make day two even now! We'll cheer him on the whole way, too!

I've been messing around with a Gilasaurus list since last year, and I'm glad to see someone else pick up the idea. I'm surprised it wasn't more effective with 3 Brain Control.
