Goat Format Championship 17 Deck Tech: "Peten Monarch"

Goat Format Championship 17 is the largest event ever held by Goatformat.com, as well as the largest online Goat Format event ever! 266 players have signed up for a chance at over $1,000 in prizes! New faces and grizzled veterans are aplenty, and while the typical contenders have arrived in droves, plenty of spicy decks have also made their way into the tournament. Take Loleo's Monarch list, for example, which plays a high number of flip effects in what he calls his "Advantage Grind" deck.

Deck List

Overview

Monarch is a control deck that uses cards like Mobius the Frost Monarch and Zaborg the Thunder Monarch to gain card advantage. Typically, the Monarch player will use spells like Brain Control or creatures like Gravekeeper's Spy to make it easier to summon their monarchs and gain card advanatge.

Loleo's list is unique in that it plays a much higher flip monster count that normal. Additionally, many of the monster choices, from Guardian Sphinx to Penguin Solder, are highly nonconventional.   Peten has seen successful competitive play in Monarch lists, but it's been quite a while.

Player Insight

Starting off with a both a win and a loss by the time we contacted him, Loleo had plenty to say about the deck, noting his desire to play certain synergies that helped him to manipulate the hand and field.
The side deck could use some work, and Big Eye and fissure don't really have a place here. (Ring of Destruction and Nobleman of Crossout would have been nice)

Sangan can search any low level monster in the deck. Most of the low levels try to gain card advantage; Injection Fairy lily is a cool tech to punch for game and gives a more diverse Sangan target.

Penguin and Sphinx try to get cards back in hand to enhance morphing jar and make sure the opponent can't get as much off Jar 2 (though going for deck out is an option).

Cards that could use the advantage like Raigeki Break, or other discard cards (like Tribe- Infecting Virus) would have helped.

With a little tidying up fitting in a metamorphosis would have been nice.

As every deck builder should do, it seems like Loleo is already thinking of ways to improve his list for next time. Talking more about the event itself and how it's played out for him, he was sure to note the moment he had a Penguin Soldier with over 3,000 ATK in play!

I got double Peten three times in four games. I got hit by Ring of Destruction on a 3150 ATK Penguin (United We Stand). I lost to that (could have just as easily been cylindered). Morphing Jar was actually very difficult to use because I could keep gaining advantage so trying to time the effect optimally was difficult. Magician of faith could have been useful.

Looks like some bad luck to end the day, but I'm sure this isn't the last we'll see of Loleo and their "Peten Monarch" deck!
