Overview

Picture
Historically known as "The Answer," Nate Neidelbeck piloted this deck to its first major appearance at SJC Houston 2005, where he placed in the top eight. Like the name would imply, the deck plays there copies of Spell Canceller, which it uses to disrupt the opponent's strategy while it beats down. Due to the nature of the strategy, lists usually run very few spell cards and many trap cards.

Spell Canceller is susceptible to Tsukuyomi, so most versions play a slew of cards to prevent the spirit from being an issue, including Trap Dustshoot and Light of Intervention. Light also stops flip monsters, and is the reason King Tiger Wanghu is also popular in the deck.

With so few spells available, various traps are used to replace spells frequently seen in other strategies. For example, Dust Tornado and Xing Zhen Hu usually replace Heavy Storm, while Compulsory Evacuation Device and Light of Intervention eliminate the need for Nobleman of Crossout. The fact that Spell Canceller can be traded with or run over by many popular beatdown monsters means the deck will also play a high number of battle traps in order to protect him. Most famously, Neidelbeck's original list played three Mirror Wall as a way to even the fights (and get extra Don Zaloog triggers).

Deck List

Abyss Soldier serves as a catch all with Sinister Serpent, bouncing face down monsters and traps alike. Warwolf creates a sort of soft lock when paired with Canceller, and both King Tiger and Kycoo do their part to prevent monster effects from being an issue.

Three copies of Dust Tornado replace Heavy Storm and other backrow answers. Much of the rest of the trap lineup helps the aggro game plan and wards off Tsukuyomi.

Additional Card Options

Traditionally, the deck also ran a number of discard effects, like Don Zaloog and Spirit Reaper, and more removal, like D.D. Assailant. The idea was to attack an enemy using as many forms of disruption as possible. Many lists still abide by this mindset and include these or similar cards.

With three copies of Cancellor, the deck is much more reliant on tributes than most aggro lists. So, recruiters like Mystic Tomato and Shining Angel are often used to help make its summon more certain. The aforementioned
Spirit Reaper also helps in this regard.

  • Mystic Tomato

  • Spirit Reaper
