Overview

Picture
The premier OTK deck of Goat Format, Reasoning Gate OTK takes advantage of the namesake spells Reasoning and Monster Gate to create a powerful board presence and kill the opponent in one turn. While slightly different in their conditions, both Reasoning and Gate special summon a monster and mill a plethora of spell cards from the top of the deck. Due to the wording of these cards, they also mill over monsters with special summoning conditions such as Chaos Sorcerer, allowing you to summon other Chaos Sorcerers and Black Luster Soldier, Envoy of the Beginning from the hand, followed by using Dimension Fusion to summon some of the banished monsters.

The most commonly run monsters in Reasoning Gate decks are Dark Magician of Chaos and Sacred Crane, both of which supply immediate card advantage when summoned. Also commonly found are Jinzo and Airknight Parshath. Jinzo is a Dark who prevents interaction on your combo turn, and Parshath is a Light who attacks through goats and can provide card advantage over time. Other monsters played include Blowback Dragon, Cyber Stein, Fusilier Dragon, the Dual Mode Beast, and many more. Many monsters can find a home in Reasoning Gate as long as they’re high impact and don’t share a level with many other monsters.

Besides the monsters and the combo pieces, Reasoning Gate decks play a host of spell-based answers to anything blocking the kill. Giant Trunade is played with Heavy Storm to keep opposing spells and traps out of the equation, Nobleman of Crossout and/or Mind Control handle face-downs, Lightning Vortex helps against goat tokens and potentially threatening creatures, and Snatch Steal and Brain Control are sometimes used to add to your own board using opponent’s monsters. They also often play Scapegoat and Metamorphosis. The goats help stall until it is time for the OTK, and can be tributed for Monster Gate in lieu of a monster that can attack. Metamorphosis can be used not only to summon Thousand-Eyes Restrict but also with high level monsters to summon powerful fusions like Gatling Dragon, Ryu Senshi, and King Dragun.

Though seen as both fun and explosive, Reasoning Gate decks are fragile to disruption. A simple negation to attacks such as Scapegoat or Threatening Roar can cut off a crucial turn, and transform an OTK into a punishable over-extension. Additionally, the deck’s overreliance on spells and special summons makes it vulnerable to Dark Balter the Terrible, Spell Canceller, Jowgen, the Spiritualist, Cursed Seal of the Forbidden Spell, and Royal Oppression. Lastly, the deck needs both key pieces and a critical mass to secure victory. It’s soft to discard effects and has a higher chance to brick than most fair decks.

Deck List

Carl Waite's fifth place list from Patreon World Championship Qualifier 5 held in July of 2021. The list is notable for the inclusion of both Blowback Dragon and Magical Marionette, which give it additional removal options that don't reduce the attacking potential of the monsters.

Variants

Cyber-Stein Reasoning Gate

Commonly known as “Stein Gate,” Cyber Stein Reasoning Gate is a variant of Reasoning Gate built around the namesake Cyber Stein. While other Reasoning Gate decks may include one or two Stein, here two or three copies are played front and center in the deck’s design. Stein Gate often plays  Megamorph, increasing damage output in combination with Stein’s life point cost and potentially setting up an OTK with Master of Oz alone. Stein Gate is also more likely to play Sangan. While Sangan may appear to be an underwhelming hit off Reasoning or Gate, it shines best when summoned off Reasoning and then sacrificed for Gate, at which point you can search for and normal summon a Cyber Stein. Also searchable is a Byser Shock, which can be used to clean the opponent’s board and allow for an easy kill.

Stein Gate is significantly less likely to run Chaos Sorcerers and Dimension Fusion than standard Reasoning Gate. Instead, it ops to take advantage of the power and versatility of Cyber Stein to close out games. However, the biggest drawback of Stein Gate is also Stein. Stein gate basically starts the game with 3000 life points at its disposal, making aggressive matchups like Warriors and Burn very difficult to manage. Additionally, the deck plays a high amount of monsters that are underwhelming in the wrong circumstances, impacting the deck’s comeback ability off a top-decked Reasoning or Monster Gate.

The following is MattUber's
Patreon World Championship Qualifier 5 list, which they won the event with.

Dark Reasoning Gate

Named for its use of primarily Dark monsters, this is another variant of Reasoning Gate. In addition to usual suspects of Jinzo and Dark Magician of Chaos, Dark Gate decks often play the engine of Toon Cannon Soldier with three Toon Table of Contents, some number of Rare Metal Dragon, and one or two Strike Ninja. Rare Metal Dragon, Strike Ninja, and Soul Release are used in the same capacity that Chaos Sorcerer in standard Reasoning Gate decks. Monsters which may also be found in Dark Gate decks include Fusilier Dragon, the Dual-Mode Beast, Magical Marionette, Blowback Dragon, Cyber Stein, or other powerful dark monsters.

Dark Gates' threats are different in level and nature to those of standard Reasoning Gate decks, some of which double as answers to the opponents’ monster in their own right. The need for only one attribute (versus two in traditional lists) combined with the searchability of Strike Ninja with Reinforcement of the Army adds ease to Dimension Fusion plays. However, Dark Reasoning gate is less effective at OTKing than Standard Reasoning Gate, as it lacks the pure draw power provided by Sacred Crane.

Alephya2 played this list in our
Patreon World Championship Qualifier 4 event in June of 2021, winning first place.

Dragon Reasoning Gate

A variant of Reasoning Gate OTK, Dragon Reasoning Gate (known also as “Dragons” or “Horus Gate”) is a deck built around the powerful protection and restriction effects of King Dragun, Tyrant Dragon, Horus the Black Flame Dragon, and sometimes Armed Dragon. King Dragun is summoned either with Cyber Stein or Fusilier Dragon, the Dual Mode Beast combined with Metamorphosis. King is then used to summon Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6 (who’s also summonable by Reasoning or Gate itself), which can then become Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8. The end goal is a board of massive threats who can’t be attacked over or targeted, and spells can’t be cast. Throw in Royal Decree and the opponent is almost completely devoid of options.

Dragon Gate is capable of quickly creating a powerful and oppressive board presence. It also has hands unaffected by spell disruption, as an opening of Stein and Horus Level 6 can build a board spell-free. However, Dragon Gate has a tendency to be an incredibly linear glass cannon. It's significantly more likely to brick or create an underwhelming board, and it has close to no recoverability, often conceding to a resolved Tribe-Infecting Virus.

Thunder Dragon Reasoning Gate

Thunder Dragon Reasoning Gate (known also as “Noellegate” after the deck’s creator, who's FLC8 first place list is featured below) is a Reasoning Gate variant focused not just on an OTK but an FTK. While standard Reasoning Gate decks may stall with Scapegoat and Metamorphosis, Thunder Dragon Gate forgoes these slower cards for three Thunder Dragons, Reload(s), Upstart Goblin(s), and three Toon Table of Contents along with one Toon Cannon Soldier. These cards provide fast and effective deck-thinning to sculpt the player’s hand into one suitable to killing the opponent quickly. Toon Cannon Soldier is also good as both a play extender and a damage extender, potentially dealing thousands of damage in one turn with its sacrifice ability. Lastly, if Spell Economics is played, Thunder Dragon Gate decks with Toon Cannon Soldier are potentially capable of an Economics kill.

Thunder Dragon Gate is a much faster and more consistent version of Reasoning Gate. It’s card quality is superior, as the deck thinning cards allow the deck to play less low-quality cards. That being said, these very same cards can be antithetical to what the deck is trying to do. Upstart Goblin gives the opponent life against a deck desperately trying to take it away, and if no copy of Thunder Dragon is drawn then 3 of them remain stuck in the deck as potentially awful hits for Reasoning or Monster Gate.

Tribute Reasoning Gate

An interesting variant of Reasoning Gate that occasionally doesn’t even play Reasoning. Tribute gate gets its name from its use of an above-average quantity of one-tribute monsters. Potential choices include Airknight Parshath, Jinzo, Mefist, the Infernal General, Skull Archfiend of Lightning, Dark Ruler Ha Des, Blowback Dragon, and others. In addition to Monster Gate and Reasoning, Tribute Gate also plays 2-3 Brain Control along with Snatch Steal as a way to use opponents monsters for the tribute summon of your own.

Tribute Gate is not an OTK deck, forgoing the combination of banishing monsters and Dimension Fusion in place of more defensive cards. It prefers to play a patient game as it dominates the board with quick threats. This trades explosiveness for consistency by removing potential bricks from the deck, but does not entirely shed the fragility associated with the Reasoning Gate strategy.

Venus Reasoning Gate

A variant of Reasoning Gate Turbo, Venus Gate Tries to take advantage of The Agent of Creation - Venus to summon Mystical Shine Balls as a way of thinning the deck and increasing board presence. The tokens can be used as tributes to Monster Gate or Toon Cannon Soldier, and can be banished to summon Soul of Purity and Light.

While Venus can potentially setup highly explosive plays, it comes with an opportunity cost of playing 3 mediocre and 3 terrible Reasoning Gate targets in your Reasoning Gate deck. No one wants to hit a Shine Ball off a Monster Gate. It’s just a fact.

Water Reasoning Gate

Water Reasoning Gate is a variant of Reasoning Gate utilizing mostly water monsters (though Dark Magician of Chaos is still used). The mostly common among these is Levia-Dragon - Daedalus, who can wipe the rest of the board when combined with A Legendary Ocean. Also usable with Ocean is Giga Gagagigo, who is both a normal summonable 2650 ATK body combined with the field spell and also a fine hit off Reasoning or Gate. Lastly, Water Gate often uses Aqua Spirit and/or Fenrir in the same capacity that standard Reasoning Gate decks use Chaos Sorcerer and Black Luster Soldier, Envoy of the Beginning.

The threats in Water Gate decks are different in level and in impact to those of other Reasoning Gate decks. While 7 is a generally useless Reasoning call against most Gate Decks, it is the level of Water Gate’s most deadly monster. However, Water Gate’s threats are overall less powerful than that of other Gate decks, and the deck itself has seen little competitive success.

Additional Card Options

Byser Shock and Dragged Down into the Grave were popular cards during the revival era of the format. They have since fallen to the wayside for more powerful options, but still see play from time to time.

The Empty Jar package of Cyber Jar + Morphing Jar + Book of Tayou is infrequently used to dig through the deck much in the same way as Monster Gate or Reasoning.
