Overview

Picture
Lockdown Burn is a classic strategy that tries to prevent the opponent from attacking until it can win through direct damage. Cards used for both protection and burn vary from deck to deck, but the core strategy is always the same. This being said, Level Limit Area B and Gravity Bind are the most common protection cards seen in Goat Format Lockdown Burn decks. Wave-Motion Cannon, Just Desserts, Secret Barrel, and Lava Golem are all popular burn cards.

Despite the negative connotation held by some members of the community toward the strategy, Lockdown Burn has had both historic and modern success, and continues to be a popular choice for casual and competitive players alike.

Deck List

The most common version of Burn in the format, this is generally speaking what most players think of when picturing a Lockdown Burn deck. All of the popular stall and burn cards are present. Gravity Bind, Level Limit, and Messenger of Peace keep you alive, while Lava Golem, Stealth Bird, Wave Motion Cannon, and Nightmare Wheel slowly win you the game.

Variants

Bad Reaction Burn

Bad Reaction Burn relies on finding and abusing Bad Reaction to Simochi, which causes all life gain the opponent receives to be replaced with life loss. From there, it will combine traditional burn cards with cards that will force the opponent to gain life, like Rain of Mercy, Upstart Goblin, and The Eye of Truth.

Drain Burn

Pioneered by Shane in the Format Library Championship Series 3 (in which he got 1st place) Drain Burn is likely the most successful modern Lockdown Burn variant.  The deck abuses its namesake card, Skill Drain, to maximize survivability. With Drain in play, Big Shield Gardna never switches to attack position, making it much more difficult to deal with. Additionally, the Continuous Trap answers Breaker, Jinzo (if Drain was in play first), Mobius, and any other monster that might try to break through your Gravity Binds and Wall of Revealing Lights.

Fire Princess Burn

Fire Princess Burn attempts to maximize the burn effect of the eponymous Fire Princess. After using UFO Turtle to search out the Princess, the deck sets up walls with Level Limit, Gravity Bind, and Messenger of Peace to protect her. From there, life gain cards like Solemn Wishes, Life Absorbing Machine, and Cure Mermaid are used to trigger Fire Princess' ability as often as possible. Life Absorbing Machine is particularly helpful in mitigating the otherwise dramatic life loss of Solemn Judgement, My Body as a Shield, and Chain Energy, which are included to protect your namesake card. It can also regularly trigger Fire Princess thanks to Messenger of Peace's Standby cost.

Tax Burn

Tax Burn is a Lockdown Burn deck that tries to punish players for using their cards. Apart from the traditional stall package, the deck uses Chain Energy and Toll to burn players every time they play a card or attack. Dark Snake Syndrome and Curse of Darkness work to much the same end. Rounding out the core of the deck's strategy, though, is Des Wombat. With him in play, your opponent is the only one that is actually punished under the bulk of your taxing cards.

Additional Card Options

While Gravity Bind and Level Limit are by far the most commonly used lockdown cards, there are other options available that have seen play. These are normally cards that, when used in combination with each other, prevent attacks outright. These combinations are usually interchangeable with other lockdown cards in Lockdown Burn and its variants, though some are much less viable in a competitive setting.
  • Astral Barrier + Spirit Barrier
  • Dragon Capture Jar + DNA Surgery
  • Insect Barrier / Prickle Fairy + DNA Surgery
  • Cat's Ear Tribe + Kishido Spirit / Heart of Clear Water
  • Stumbling + Gravity Axe - Grarl
