Overview

Picture
The classic control deck of the format, Goat Control is named after its use of Scapegoat as means of defending life points and gaining advantage. The summoned tokens can be used to steal opponents’ monsters with Creature Swap or Enemy Controller, and while not tributable for a tribute summon, they can be tributed for Metamorphosis to summon Thousand Eyes Restrict. When combined with Tsukuyomi, Restrict can take full control of the board and chip in for damage until the game is won. Along with this, Goat Control plays powerful flip monsters as well as a small number of tribute monsters (mainly Airknight Parshath, Jinzo, or a Monarch).

The deck primarily uses quick play spells like Book of Moon and Scapegoats as a means for disruption and protection, meaning it is well-positioned to run Royal Decree in the main deck in certain trap-heavy metas (though in others it may be running more traps).

Despite being the format’s namesake, Goat Control has been outclassed as the "best" deck in the format due to its often reactive nature. Still, it is a good option in an aggressive meta and is flexible enough for a skilled player to compete in any environment.

Deck List

This is Lolmarcus's World's 2020 list, which he piloted to a seventh place finish. A full three Asura Priest makes this version much more powerful in the mirror match, and paired with the single copy of Chaos Sorcerer, shows a higher emphasis on aggression than normal. Trap Dustshoot is also an uncommon inclusion that is powerful against the mirror, but works well against other strategies, too.

Variants

Burn Goat Control

Burn Goat Control is a variant of Goat Control looking to kill the opponent with burn damage from a fully-charged Wave-Motion Cannon and Des Koala. The deck is great at stalling and can win without ever attacking, but a well-placed backrow removal card can undo Burn Goat Control’s plan in one fell swoop. This specific list plays a full three Spell Shield Type-8, which protects its high number of flip monsters from Nobleman of Crossout, but can also stop random power spells, like Heavy Storm, from disrupting its game plan.

Emissary Goat Control

A variant of Goat Control looking to take advantage of the often asymmetrical effect of Emissary of the Afterlife. The deck plays three Emissary, a Sonic Duck (the highest ATK monster it can search), Giant Soldier of Stone (the highest DEF monster it can search), and Mokey Mokey or D.D. Trainer as a tribute fodder for Metamorphosis.

Horus Goat Control

A variant of Goat Control using some amount of Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV4, 6, and 8. They often play some amount of Gravekeeper’s Spy (occasionally with Gravekeeper’s Guard) to allow for the tribute summon of Horus LV6, or Fusilier Dragon, the Duel Mode Beast, which can be used with Metamorphosis to make King Dragun and summon Horus. Though this list omits it, they often also play a full three Royal Decree, as the summon of Horus LV8 with a Royal Decree is incredibly oppressive to deal with.

Phoenix Goat Control

Phoenix Goat Control uses an Apprentice Magician package, making use of the spellcaster recruiter to search for Magician of Faith, Old Vindictive Magician, and Hand of Nephthys. The this gives a consistent method of finding and activating Hand in order to special summon Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys. Scapegoat's use in Goat Control makes Hand's activation less likely to affect the deck's hold on card advantage. Additionally, Tsukuyomi paired with Vindictive creates a removal loop similar to that of Swarm of Scarabs and its cousins.

Warrior Goat Control

A variant of Goat Control making use of the Warrior engine, often consisting of two Reinforcement of the Army, an Exiled force, a D.D. Warrior Lady, a Don Zaloog, and a Blade Knight. Some are Goat Control decks that tech this engine, while others more closely resemble Warrior decks teaching Scapegoat and Metamorphosis. Either way, it combines aggressive and versatile monsters with the board control of goat tokens and Thousand Eyes Restrict. While the two strategies have a tendency to step on each other’s toes, it is nothing a well-placed Tsukuyomi cannot fix.

Zombie Goat Control

A variant of Goat Control making use of the zombie engine, often consisting of multiple Pyramid Turtle, some Vampire Lord and/or Ryu Kokki, and potentially Spirit Reaper and/or Book of Life. Creature Swap is placed at a premium here, as it not only trades goat tokens for opponent’s monsters, but also allows for tricks with Turtle. Zombie Goat Control is best suited against aggressive decks, but may struggle against traditional Goat Control and flip-heavy decks due to a higher reliance on the battle phase.

Additional Card Options

D.D. Assailant has seen some unconventional play, though it is more common to see Abyss soldier or Kycoo in lists that want more aggression. Mystic Tomato and Shining Angel are sometimes seen for similar reasons. These floaters make it easier to fill the graveyard with Light and Dark monsters, and are great tribute fodder for Airknight, Jinzo, or a Monarch. regarding tribute monsters, Mefist sometimes replaces or partners with Airknight, as it has a similar effect and stats.
  • D.D. Assailant
  • Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer
  • Abyss Soldier
  • Mystic Tomato
  • Shining Angel
  • Mefist, the Infernal General
