Overview

Picture
Final Countdown is a lockdown strategy which seeks to activate its eponymous card as soon as possible and then survive for twenty turns. Typically, this is done through common floodgate cards like Level Limit - Area B, Gravity Bind, Wall of Revealing Light, and Messenger of Peace. However, there are many other methods of survival that have been played throughout the years.

Because of the high life point cost of Countdown and other commonly played cards for the strategy, it's not uncommon to see life gain used in the deck as well. Nimble Momonga and Solemn Wishes are two frequently seen cards in this regard.

Deck List

This list features a full three Countdown, plus Different Dimension Capsule, which can search for the namesake spell, or anything else the Countdown player might need at the time. Because of the reliance on floodgates, as well as the use of Capsule, a large number of protection cards, like Solemn Judgement and Curse of Royal, are also played. Light of Intervention prevents flip effect monsters like Magician of Faith from becoming an issue. It can also protect Momonga and Spirit Reaper from Nobleman of Crossout.

Additional Card Options

Gear Golem the Moving Fortress, Gravekeeper's Spy, and Legendary Jujitsu Master are all respectable walls which protect the Countdown player should a floodgate fall. Each has their own merits, as well as weaknesses.

There are many combinations of cards which can soft-lock the opponent out of attacking. Dragon Capture Jar combined with DNA Surgery is likely the most common because both cards can be searched for with A Cat of Ill Omen. However, these combinations are not often played, and viability in a competitive setting is unlikely.

Cursed Seal of the Forbidden Spell and other counter traps can be used to protect key cards from destruction. In lists which focus heavily on traps, Seven Tools of the Bandit can prevent Royal Decree from shutting the deck down.

Some versions rely heavily on single-use traps which prevent attacks, instead of or in combination with the traditional floodgates. Negate Attack, Threatening Roar, and Waboku, are all commonly seen in these "turbo fog" versions.
