Overview

Picture
Based on Yugi Moto's favorite monster, Dark Magician decks attempt to use the famous spellcaster and his support cards to achieve victory. Typically, this is done with Skilled Dark Magician (SDM), chaining a string of spell cards in order to special summon Dark Magician from the hand, deck, or graveyard. Double Coston can also be used for an easy tribute summon. Though infrequently seen, other support cards, like Dark Magic Attack and Thousand Knives are also sometimes played.

Becuase of the reliance on SDM, Dark Magician decks are normally very spell heavy. The most common way to fill SDM with counters is Toon Table of Contents. Because it can find itself, a single copy of the spell can be chained into others, achieving the three counters needed for SDM instantly.

Apprentice Magician is also commonly played. She allows for some toolboxing, while also placing extra spell counters where needed.

Deck List

At its heart, Dark Magician is an aggro deck. With his high attack, Kycoo is a great partner for SDM that also prevents Chaos monsters from being summoned and killing our boss monster. My Body as a Shield protects them, and our titular spellcaster, from battle traps and other remoaval.

Apprentice Magician finds Magician of Faith, which helps bring up our spell count, or Old Vindictive Magician, which can answer threats. Tsukuyomi synergizes well with all three of the smaller spellcasters, allowing for continued spell counter placement off of Apprentice (powerful with Breaker), the replay of power spells with Faith, or Swarm of Scarabs impressions with Old Vindictive.

Book of Moon also pairs well with apprentice and company, while also serving other roles, like adding spell counters. Dark Magic Attack is situational, but extremely powerful. It clears the way for Dark Magician to work his magic without fear of a deadly back row.

Additional Card Options

Anything that makes use of spell counters is worth consideration. Blast Magician specifically has decent stats and can continuously destroy enemies if left unchecked. Though it is more difficult to summon, Magical Marionette does the same for less.

Dark Magician Girl with Sage's Stone can make for some explosive turns, but requires a large number of tribute monsters. Sorcerer of Dark Magic is not uncommon in such lists, as he can be summoned after a resolved Sage's Stone.

Non-Spellcasting Area protects Dark Magician while also acting as a spell for our counters. Should it or other protections fail, Miracle Restoring reanimates lost Dark Magicians. However, it requires more hoops than Soul Resurrection or other reanimation cards already played.

Diffusion Wave-Motion could help clear goat tokens, but it is both situational and costly.
